The Answer: Cross Section of a Banana Tree (Boquete, Panama)
I came across this unique sight when I was hiking in Boquete, Panama. To me, it looked like an odd eyeball inside a tree. Anyway, it’s really just a banana tree that had been cut in half for some reason.
By the way, Boquete, Panama, is not a low-lying area as you might think. It’s actually in the green mountain highlands of Panama in Chiriguí Province, not far from the Costa Rican Border. It’s 1,200 metres above sea level and has a cool, comfortable climate. Some of the best coffee in the world comes from this part of Panama, including Geisha.

This looks like the cross-section of a banana or a plantain plant. I am guessing you took this photo in either Panama or Niicaragua, as I remember you mentioning you went there recently.

Right now, you’re in the lead–one of the countries you’ve chosen is the location. I’m quite sure that the photo is of banana or platano plant–one that happened to get sliced in half somehow, forming this “cross section.”

Hmm, this is tricky. Given that I haven’t been to either Panama nor Nicaragua, I’ll just guess here. Since you already used a photo from Panama as your trippy travel photo #12, I am going to go with Nicaragua here. And since I have this idea that plantains/bananas prefer lowlands to mountains, then I am guessing it’s in the Pacific Lowlands, near the Golfo de Fonseca.

Normally, I’d tell you wrong country/location and ask you to keep guessing, but I won’t this time. You were so close the first time, so it’s only fair to declare you the winner right now!

So it was Panama! Thanks for letting me win even if I picked Nicaragua: I guess if you told me it was wrong, then the correct country becomes obvious, as there’s only one other choice! And yes, I am surprised that this isn’t taken in a lowland region. Having lived in the Philippines for a bit, and having spent quite a bit in the Guatemalan highlands, my banana data points all pointed to the lowland area of countries, so yes, I am quite surprised. That being said, cross-sections of banana trees were a common sight in my childhood, hence the fast guess!

Yes, I was indeed born in the Philippines. My dad is a diplomat, so we lived in various places around the world when I was growing up, but we maintained a house just outside Manila nevertheless, and we do have banana trees in the backyard, which I get to chop down when they get too old, or too many!
