Jeruen of Linguist in Waiting! He nailed it rather fast, I must say. I think this was the fastest round of thise game we’ve ever played. Congrats!
The Answer: Cross Section of a Banana Tree (Boquete, Panama)
I came across this unique sight when I was hiking in Boquete, Panama. To me, it looked like an odd eyeball inside a tree. Anyway, it’s really just a banana tree that had been cut in half for some reason.
By the way, Boquete, Panama, is not a low-lying area as you might think. It’s actually in the green mountain highlands of Panama in Chiriguí Province, not far from the Costa Rican Border. It’s 1,200 metres above sea level and has a cool, comfortable climate. Some of the best coffee in the world comes from this part of Panama, including Geisha.
Can’t get enough?

It’s looks like the cross-section of something like a dead banana tree.

Hi, Eric. You are absolutely right. It is exactly that! Someone else had the same guess as you–and had the country–so they’ll be the official winner. You, however, are the runner up. Congrats and thanks for playing….great C Bus CSI work!
This looks like the cross-section of a banana or a plantain plant. I am guessing you took this photo in either Panama or Niicaragua, as I remember you mentioning you went there recently.

Right now, you’re in the lead–one of the countries you’ve chosen is the location. I’m quite sure that the photo is of banana or platano plant–one that happened to get sliced in half somehow, forming this “cross section.”
Can you tell me which country and perhaps the region? I’ll then declare you the official winner.
Thanks for playing!
Hmm, this is tricky. Given that I haven’t been to either Panama nor Nicaragua, I’ll just guess here. Since you already used a photo from Panama as your trippy travel photo #12, I am going to go with Nicaragua here. And since I have this idea that plantains/bananas prefer lowlands to mountains, then I am guessing it’s in the Pacific Lowlands, near the Golfo de Fonseca.

Ah…very interesting to see what you’re thinking–especially in terms of what my strategy might be (not having two Panama shots too close together).
Normally, I’d tell you wrong country/location and ask you to keep guessing, but I won’t this time. You were so close the first time, so it’s only fair to declare you the winner right now!
I’m posting the exact location in a little while. I think you’ll be surprised based on the lowlands part of your guess.
Thanks for playing–awesome job guessing–and congrats on winning!
So it was Panama! Thanks for letting me win even if I picked Nicaragua: I guess if you told me it was wrong, then the correct country becomes obvious, as there’s only one other choice! And yes, I am surprised that this isn’t taken in a lowland region. Having lived in the Philippines for a bit, and having spent quite a bit in the Guatemalan highlands, my banana data points all pointed to the lowland area of countries, so yes, I am quite surprised. That being said, cross-sections of banana trees were a common sight in my childhood, hence the fast guess!

Yes, the process of elimination would have been super easy!
Wild, no, that it’s in a lowland region?
Were you born in the Philippines? Just wondering. In any case, now I understand why you know so much re: banana trees!
I don’t know how you come up with these! I need something easier 😉

Ha, ha….yeah, they can be tricky. But guess what? Someone actually guessed this one really fast. Revealing the answer and winner soon! Meanwhile, some fun guesses are still coming in.
Super-macro cross-section of a cigar in Havana, Cuba is our guess. : )
What a great guess…very interesting! I like the idea of Cuba, too. You are very ‘warm’ because of the location you chose. However, it’s actually something else. Correct guess/winner to be revealed very soon. Thanks for playing !

Fantastic guess–seriously. Love it! But it’s something else…
Yes, I was indeed born in the Philippines. My dad is a diplomat, so we lived in various places around the world when I was growing up, but we maintained a house just outside Manila nevertheless, and we do have banana trees in the backyard, which I get to chop down when they get too old, or too many!

Lucky you to have seen some of the world when you were growing up–cool!
