I took this photo of a hand-carved dugout Kuna Yala canoe in San Blas, Panama. It is used by the Kuna (local indigenous) for transportation and fishing.
I zoomed in on the hand-painted design so that players in this round would have to work hard to win. The person who guessed it followed these steps:
1. Look at the Photo/Study the Details
2. Guess What/Where/Why!
What is the subject of this photo?
Where was I traveling when I saw it?
(If you have no idea, it’s OK to make up silly answers. That’s fun, too!)
3. Check Back Later!
–Post your guesses here in the Comments Section (tweets and FB comments don’t count–sorry)
–Keep checking and guessing as the guessing gets good…
–See who won…maybe it will be you!
The Prize?
A mention of your name and a link to your site from within this post.
And the Winner Is…
Jeruen Dery of Memoirs of a Traveling Linguist. He won the last round of this game and continues to be a champion. Maybe he is the champion.
The Answer:
The inside of a hand-carved dugout Kuna Yala canoe. While visiting the San Blas islands, I saw many of these. Here’s the same photo of the canoe, pre-cropping.
These types of canoes, by the way, are called ‘ulus,’ and the Kuna use big hand-carved paddles to propel themselves. It takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks to make one, depending on the size.
Here’s a photo of the canoe, pre-cropping.

Oh Lisa *shakes fist* This is some piece of art which of course could be absolutely anywhere in the world! *rolls eyes*
LOL
But, I guess you just want us to get on with the guessing, eh? OK, OK, I’ll start the ball rolling…
It appears to be part of a painting. The paints look like the type which are made up from packets of powder. The piece of rope suggests boats or a maritime area. Given the bright colors, I will guess this has been taken in a Latin country in SouthAm, CentralAm or Spain, on the the coast.
Hello, Robert. I’m not sure that this is truly ‘art work’ and if you study the pattern and the colors closely, you’ll see that. So I wouldn’t call it a ‘painting.’ But yes, paint is involved.
Maritime is a ‘hot’ guess. But you’ll need to be more specific than that to be declared the ‘winner.’
Re: where…I’d say you’re on the right track, but I won’t say more than that now. Will give someone else a chance–LOL.
No fist-shaking, by the way. It’s against the rules.
*cheeky grin*
I’m so sorry, Robert–cheeky grins are not allowed, either.
So maritime is indeed hot. I thought about that, I was thinking this is the underside of a boat. But I am having a hard time figuring out whether there’s water here, and the blurred lines are due because of it. I can almost see the ripples caused by the rope.
Just looking at your tags, I’ll make Indonesia as the first guess as to where this is.

Underside of a boat is super hot, but not exactly correct. Also, what kind of boat? And where? It’s not in Indonesia.
Where? It is in a Pacific coastal country on South or Central America.
Type of boat? A wooden boat. On a fairground or park ride.

Okay, time to ask questions. Is it the underside of a maritime vessel? I don’t think you took the photo from underwater, so if it is the underside of a vessel, then the vessel is upside-down floating. It looks like it is made of wood. Maybe it’s a barge.
If it is not in Indonesia, let me pick the next big tag you have, Nicaragua.

Wood, yes. Underside, no. Inside, yes.
Nicaragua, no–but that is VERY warm–hot, actually–as far as location…
Hi Lisa!
I think that’s the INSIDE of a boat. And by the colours, maybe Spain?

I don’t think I am allowed to guess
Can you give a hint?
Hi, Frank. Yes, it’s the inside of a boat. Glad you see that! Some have said it’s the underside, which is not the case.
Spain, however, is not the country…
Thanks for the guess!
Um… underside of a rowboat that you found in “dry-dock” during your recent trip to Toronto.
*shrug* *cheeky grin*

Oh look, Maria did a *cheeky grin*! LOL
OK, how about this: it used to be a boat, but now it has been turned into a piece of wall, adorning a wall. This would explain its good condition.
And still sticking with coastal Central or South America.
*sly grin*

Ha ha re: Maria! She’s allowed to make a ‘cheeky grin’ because I’ve met her in person. If/when I meet you, you’ll also be allowed to…
I think your guess is cooler now. It’s not a former boat; it’s currently being used as one. Not a painting.
Location still good.
#ReigningChampionSlipping
Ok, so far here’s what we have. It is the INSIDE of a functioning boat; I am guessing it is a canoe of some sort. It is not in Nicaragua, but somewhere else in Central America; I will guess Panama.

Ah…great guess–and you’re right! Canoe…and in Panama. I could declare you the winner, but…it would be fun to see if you could figure out which indigenous group uses this kind of boat.
Hmm, I didn’t know off the top of my head, so I did my research (I checked Wikipedia and your previous articles, of course).
And so I am guessing this is the inside of a boat of the Ngöbe-Buglé/Guaymi people, who mostly dwell in Chiriqui province.

I knew you’d do some research–cool! Good guess, but too far west…can you head east? Sorry to be making you work so hard…
Nah, I actually enjoy it. Makes for a good break from my actual research.
Okay, how about this? My newest guess would be it’s a boat from the Kuna people: I saw you’ve been to San Blas, which seems to be also known as Guna Yala, in the Caribbean.
Jeruen recently posted..The Itchy Feet that Could
Yes, the Kuna Yala–it’s one of their canoes! You are the official winner of this round of the game. Congrats!! I must notify Robert W-he hasn’t won for a while. He will be disappointed.
Beautiful! Looks like a piece of art
Would be a nice display piece for my “future garden”.

I agree–it does look like art. Planning a garden?
