Cute Chihuahua Resting on Sidewalk in Todos Santos, Baja California (Photo of the Day)

Chihuahua in Mexico

Just took this photo of a cute little Chihuahua a couple of hours ago here in Todo Santos in Baja California, Mexico. I just had to stop and say hello–that’s how cute he/she was!

Chihuahua in Mexico

Deer or Apple Head?

Chihuahuas have one of two types of heads. This one has a ‘deer head’ (not an apple head), and was one of about 10 I’ve seen so far today.  A few of the others had ‘apple’ heads (with rounder features). Both kinds of Chihuahuas seem to be everywhere in this town!

Strangely, when I visited the city of Chihuahua a while back, I don’t recall seeing any at all.

History of Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas, which originated in Mexico, are named after the state of Chihuahua. According to one theory, they descended from the Techichi, small canines first domesticated by the Toltecs, the people who conquered the Mayans.  Not only did they keep them as pets, but they also used them for religious purposes.

When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs, they (the ruling class and the clergy) used the dogs for the same purposes–sometimes sacrificing them. The lower class, however, used them for food.

Your Thoughts/Reactions

The Chihuahua is one of my favorite dog breeds. Not sure what it is that I love so much. I think it’s the face, but I also like the size. When I see one, I like to hold it like a baby. :)

Are you a fan of these tiny dogs? If so, what is it that you like? If not, what is it that you don’t like? And what is your favorite breed of dog–and why?

Or are you simply a cat lover with no interest in dogs at all?

Cute dog! I’m not a fan though of small dogs but prefer the mid size ones like Sharpei.
