This photo is of a fresco of a nearly-nude woman painted on the wall inside Qasr Castle–aka, Qusayr Amra–in Jordan. The castle was built somewhere between 711 and 715 AD by Umayad Caliph Walid I. I had the opportunity to see this when I went on a tour of Jordan’s Eastern desert castles.
Those who played this round of the Trippy Travel Photo Game followed these steps…
1. Look at the Photo/Study the Details
2. Guess what/where!
What is it? Where was I traveling when I saw it? (You must answer both to win–or come close!)
3. Read the clues.
Clue 1: This is only slightly off the beaten path, believe it or not.
Clue 2: It’s part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See? It’s not that obscure, right?
4. Check back later!
–Post your guesses here in the Comments Section (tweets and FB comments don’t count–sorry)
–Keep checking and guessing as the guessing gets good…
–See who won…maybe it will be you!
The prize?
A mention of your name and a link to your site from within this post.
And the winner is…
Vincent of Vintuitive.com. He guessed it within a few hours of my posting it. Congratulations!
The answer: Nearly-Nude Woman Fresco–Qasr Amra Castle, Jordan
This fresco, painted on the West wall of Great Hall of Qasr Amra, is one of several found inside the famous castle. Other frescoes are of the zodiac, hunting and wine drinking. The castle, which was used as a fortress with a garrison, is an excellent example of Islamic art and architecture.
Can’t get enough?

It is a scene from the Qusayr Amra.
You were traveling in Jordon (on the north side of Jordan’s Highway 40 to be more specific) when you saw it.

Hi, Vincent. Congrats. You are the winner!! How did you know? Were you there recently? Or did you study art history? I’m very curious.
Seems to be an Italian fresco. I would guess Pompeii. If Pompeii I’d guess you were traveling to Naples. Good stumper.

Good guess, Steve! It’s actually somewhere else, but you were ‘warm.’ Looks like someone just got the answer a little while ago. I’m surprised, too, because it wasn’t an easy one!
Barry’s Bathhouse in Damascus or does it go by another name?
Awesome guess, but not–that’s not it. Great try!
I’m a bit of an amateur archaeologist though my main interest is in ancient Egypt. I recognised it as begin from the Qusayr Amra and after a quick search found confirmation with an image at Wiipedia. I then threw in the the bit about the location being on the north side of Jordan’s Highway 40 from the article to sound clever.

Hehehe. I like your style Vincent
You didn’t even have a chance to play this time. Shame! I’ll have to have another round next week.
It was quick!
I see…well, you did sound clever!
I’m surprised that the faces haven’t been scratched out. In so many Islamic countries I’ve been (Egypt being the exception) alot of faces were removed as heretic iconography.

Good point, Naomi. Not sure why that’s not the case. Interesting…
I have no idea but love it. Very well rendered and can make enough out of the background to see there’s a story here. Thanks for sharing it.
