Today’s photo is of a monkey enjoying the sunset at Uluwatu cliff in Bali–a scene that that I must say surprised me. Most of the other monkeys were jumping and climbing on the tourists, but this was one sitting quietly.
‘Pura Luhur Uluwatu’, built in the 11th century, is a Hindu temple set on a cliff in southern part of Bali’s peninsula. Also known as the ‘monkey temple,’ the name Ulu means head and Watu means stone. “It is one of nine directional temples meant to protect Bali from evil spirits,” according to Wikipedia.

I loved the monkey chant. In fact, it was one of the highlights of my trip to Indonesia.

Even though I got a little weirded out by the sheer number of monkeys running around so close to us and grabbing stuff, that place is so incredibly beautiful. It’s nice to think about the monkeys living there, especially when it’s quiet and the people are gone.

Trippy, wasn’t it, how those monkeys acted? We got warned several times before we went and sure enough, it did happen. But there were some Monkey Security guards there who got them under control–phew!
It was nice to see the monkeys just sort of doing there thing there and being free vs being in a zoo.
Love that little guy! So much like us, or should I say we’re so much like him.
Haven’t been but would love to go. There were lots of gibbons in Cambodia and they were characters. Chase you, steal from you, and ham it up for the camera… especially if you had little bananas w/you.

Monkeys really are characters, aren’t they? I’ve got some cool shots from the Monkey Forest in Ubud, which I should put together in an essay. Sounds like the gibbons were fun ones, huh?

Hi, Laurel–yes, he does! I know what you mean re: monkeys and other primates. They’re pretty trippy when you spend some time with them and observe their behaviors closely.

What is it about monkeys that makes them so damn adorable?! When I was in Phi Phi I went to Monkey Beach and I couldn’t get enough! Never made it to Bali, but hope to soon!

Those monkeys can be a little scary–especially when they jump on your head!
Last month I went to uluwatu and was trying to make friends with those monkeys, at first there were one monkey who acted so calm so I decided to touch it gently but then in seconds it jumped onto my head! I was so surprised and scared too. Seems like the monkey was trying to find bugs or fleas or something else in my hair lololol
That’s pretty funny and slightly scary! At times, I wanted to perhaps pet one of the monkeys and now, I’m glad I didn’t. They really did seem to like digging into a person’s hair. Interesting…
