Today’s photo is of a rice paddy in Bali that I spotted off to the side of a bumpy dirt road leading to Pasir Putih, aka, the “secret white sand beach”. It caught my eye because of the reflection of the sky and the sense of peace it conveys. It was near several rice terraces, all of which were gorgeous.
I loved all the rice paddies I saw in Indonesia–whether in Sumatra, Java or Bali. All were beautiful and some were mysterious. Each time I saw one, it was a real visual treat–regardless of the stage in the process it was in (except for those already harvested, which were often brown and dried out.)
Your Thoughts/Experiences
Have you ever seen rice paddies? How about rice terraces? If so, where–and what did you think? Did you go crazy photographing them?
If you’ve never seen one in person, what do you think of this one?
I find rice paddies beautiful–especially when they’ve just been watered or flooded (whichever is the correct the term for it). All of them, of course, caught my eye when I was in Indonesia. Stay tuned for a full photo essay on rice paddies from 3 islands with photos in color and in black and white.
PS: Are you curious about the “secret” beach I visited? Perhaps I’ll do a post on that soon…

Oh wow! That is surprisingly gorgeous. I’ve never actually seen any rice paddies or anything in person as I’ve never traveled anywhere they have them.
(And yes, please share your “secret beach”)

Thanks, Ava!
Beautiful! I visited a bar recently in Ubud, Indonesia, and it had the loveliest view out over some nearby fields of rice – ten minutes turned into an hour and I still couldn’t look away (except to order another beer)
