Taking a break from shopping is always a good idea. This Muslim woman, whose photo I took near the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul, obviously thought so. I suspect she was happy to be enjoying a moment of peace while outside and away from the chaos of the bustling market.

She caught my attention because of the look on her face and the fact that she was dressed in all black (and had dark bags), which meant I might capture some nice contrast. Although I shot the photo on my previous camera, which had certain limitations, I’m happy with the results.

Do you enjoy visiting markets and bazaars? Have you been to the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul? If so, what did you think?
Are you comfortable shooting photos of random people, locals especially, whom you encounter while traveling? Do you think one should ask permission first? I did not ask in this case because of the candid nature of what I saw. If I had, I think the photo would have been very different–and perhaps, disappointing.

I took many candid photos, I love capturing people’s real expression. Much more meaningful than a pose. However, until now, I still feel somewhat guilty doing so.
In return, when I realized I’m becoming a photo taking object, I usually give the photographer easy time by not flinching – Weird way to pay back?

Dina–I hear you re: candid photos. They are truly meaningful and often tell a story. I prefer them–although in some cases, I’ll ask and opt for a pose. Interesting form of payback–why not, right?

The more I take photos the more courage I have to take candid pictures of people. I feel invisible behind my camera when I’m trying to take pictures of people. Too bad most of the shots don’t turn out terribly well because I’m jerking the camera and the image is blurry! I admire people who have the mojo to just point and shoot towards strangers with wild abandon and amazing results.
Hi, Laura. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Do you have a good zoom lens? It could make it a little easier. On the other hand, they’re often slow and thus, shaky, which could be contributing to the results you mentioned.
