The Answer: Beehive House, Harran, Turkey
This photo, of a traditional “beehive” house–the roof, specifically–was shot in the Harran in Eastern Turkey. No wood or stone was used to make this structure–just adobe–and as you can imagine, it helped keep people cool in a brutally hot climate.
The Harran was a major cultural, commercial, and religious center back in the Bronze Age, and was first inhabited in 2300 BC. The city was the home of the Mesopotamian moon god Sin, under the Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Romans. Some people are still inhabiting the region.

My guess is chimney for a stove or fireplace. From the stones somewhere in your extensive travels in Latin America. Never been to the Mayan ruins and the stones look too new for ruins, but similar in type and size so I hypothesize some village on the outskirts somewhere in Mexico.

Reminds me of the corbelled roof you find inside some of the Neolithic tombs and underground chambers in Orkney and Shetland Isles…

Hi, Jonathan–great guess. Love it! Never been there, but it sounds cool. I just Google the “corbelled roof” and see the resemblance. You’re warm in terms of continent–sort of, well–not really. Maybe…LOL
Well, it is taken indoors, using flash, and it looks like you are shooting directly upwards. So, a tall conical roof made of blocks of stone. They are regular in size, so guessing the stone is soft-ish – perhaps limestone or tuff, rather than hard basalt.

I was in a meeting today and suddenly recalled a place (which I have never been to) in southern Italy which has houses with conical stone roofs. I don’t even know the name of the place – but I can visualize that inside the houses would look something like your photo.
This place in Italy isn’t ancient (not Megalithic or Neolithic) – maybe only a few hundred years old.

I’m probably way off here but it kind of looks like something I saw on PBS called a Nuraghe located on the island of Sardinia. But I think you said earlier it wasn’t in Italy. Oh well!

This is bugging me now. For some reason, maybe because you have traveled extensively in Turkey, that is where I think the picture was taken. It seems like the funnel is going down into the ground but the light at the end of the tunnel suggests a tower going up so I am taking a pot guess at Galata tower?
