Manic Mannequins Take On Ecuador: 10 Journeys Through Time and Space

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ever wonder what it would be like to experience time travel? I did it this summer and would now like to share with you my secret–my number one tip, in fact.

Visit Ecuador and go window shopping. That’s it.

See, in cities like Quito and Cuenca (and even some small towns), a unique time travel journey–back to the amazing American Frontier, into some mysterious modern moments and then moving forward  into a surreal/futuristic world of aliens—is possible.  Just walk around and look around. No guide necessary!

Silver alien mannequin

Here’s a photo essay—of Ecuador’s mannequins—which will take you on an unforgettable ride…into the past, present and the future. Want to enhance your experience? Help me with the written side of the creative process.

Write a Caption, Win a Link!

Want to help write some captions (title and perhaps commentary to go with it)? A task like this is a serious undertaking—one that I can’t handle on my own. I must enlist the help of experts. Like you. And if you write an awesome caption, one I end up using, you will be:

—thanked and mentioned within this post, with a link back to your site
—a permanent friend of the mannequins themselves; they will smile at and upon you…forever

Or, if you’d like, weave a tale about a few (or all) of the mannequins. It does seem there’s a story here, does it not?

So, without further ado, let’s get on the bus and enjoy some mannequin madness!

The Past

1. American Badger Outfitters

This one reminds me of Davy Crockett as a kid. Or would that be Daniel Boone at a tween? Definitely not a hipster or metro sexual. Cool hat, no? I’m getting one next time I’m in Quito. The reason? No one will try to steal it. Or rob me, for that matter. No one.

2. Community College Nursing Program Volunteer

Yikes. What went wrong here? Does she suffer from RBS (redundant bandage syndrome)? And wha’sup with the Playtex bra? I thought they went out of style in the 1950s.

Alternative Caption: I Got in a Fight With Mannequin #1’s Cat!

The Present

3. Oil of Olivia…the Look, the Feel of Sleek…Pleather

This shiny mannequin really caught my eye. How could it not? I worry about her, though. I would imagine her head gets cold at times. Perhaps she could borrow Davy’s hat?

Shiny Mannequin

4.Mannequin Voodoo Doll

This is one of my personal favorites. I mean, really. What the hell went wrong here? Did someone take the cheap way out? Are they rationing plastic in Ecuador? Or is somebody really mad at someone else and playing a very cruel joke? Ouch–my eyes hurt. Did I piss off the mannequin gods? If so, sorry….

Alternative Caption: Crash Test Dummy’s Rebellious Daughter

5. Mick Jagger Wannabe

That’s some tongue he’s got there, ey? (No, I’m not Canadian.) And how about his teeth? Wonder what his breath is like? Perhaps he needs a Tic Tac?

Tongue Mannequin

Future

6. Phantom of the Algae

This one looks familiar to me. Perhaps I dated him once? Anyway, I think he was handsome back then, but now–I just don’t know. Is that razor stubble?

Green alien mannequin

7. Gangsta Zombie

Um, I think something went wrong here. I can’t quite explain it, but… somethin’ just ain’t right. Also, I’ve got a silly question. Would seeing this mannequin lead you to buy the sweatshirt he’s wearing? I suspect that someone missed Merchandising 101 a few times when they were in school.

Alternative Caption: Aftershave Allergy

8.  I Come in Peace From Planet Mannequin

I’m glad this mannequin has the (R) symbol on it. That means no one will try to steal it. Smart thinking!

9. Fishface, the Pirate Queen

This one, from the Museo del Prohibido in Cuenca, has a certain spunk, in an “I’m going to abduct you” sort of way. Correct me if I’m wrong, but…she (?) looks like the kind of girl one might describe as ‘cute’ but not really pretty. Is it her eyes? Or maybe the hair? Or the weird Michael Jackson nose?

Freaky Mannequin

10. OK, OK…I Shouldn’t Have Asked for the Full Brazilian

Is it possible to take minimalism a bit too far? I think so.

Smooth Talker Mannequin

Bonus–Mannequins + Human

Someone’s flirting with someone. Is it the mannequin, whose leg is conveniently touching my Mannequin Photography Assistant, Carlos? Or is it Carlos who’s put himself right there among the lovely ladies? Hmmm.

Your Thoughts? Caption Ideas?

Have you spotted bizarre looking mannequins around the world, too? Or am I the only one? Which one of the above is your favorite? Why do you like it? What’s your idea for a caption? Share it and perhaps you’ll win a mention and a link to your site!

Mannequin Face-off: Ecuador vs the Middle East

Remember the Middle Eastern Mannequins I wrote about a while back? They’re still around. I’d love to know which mannequins you think are more peculiar–these from Ecuador or the ones on the other side of the world. Cast your vote in your comment. Thanks–and happy mannequin hunting! :)

These posts are really so cool, i’m entering onto the bus. Thanks Chickybus for all the effort you go to. These posts are my absolute favorites. Well here goes then with my naming of the mannequins:

    1) I don’t know why but this mannequin reminds me of Patrick Duffy. Perhaps more from his “Man from Atlantis” days than as Bobby Ewing. Caption “Visits to Atlantis always make my hair fuzzy.”
    2) This looks like some sort of kinky game gone wrong, whatever was being thought of here? Caption “You’re never too old to play Doctors & Nurses!”.
    3) A teenage sexy chick who’s looking to go out clubbing for the night. She has an attitude of “to be bald is to be cool”. Caption “Before Twitter, I had a full head of hair!”
    4) LMAO, this has to be zippy from UK show Rainbow gone wrong? – http://admin.newstalk.ie/wp-content/files/2011/06/Zippy.jpg Caption “Blank Expression”
    5) There’s definitely something Barrack Obama about this mannequin. Caption “I Just Want to See His Face” – a classic Rolling Stones song.
    6) It’s like the metallic finish on a car. A modern version of the old red Indian warpaint? Caption: “I said spray the car, not me!”
    7) Absolutely love this one, i’d definitely buy the sweater. Caption “Aftershave Allergy!”
    8) This is absolutely the Red Zorro, a modern interpretation. What’s he selling, i’ll buy that too. Caption “Those vitamin pills have turned me red!”
    9) Definitely not a chick to be messed with, a Pirate mistress. Is it supposed to look like Kiera Knightley – maybe not? Caption “Try Piracy, the recession proof industry”.
    10) This has to be my favorite, somebody with less hair than me! It’s good for the ego you know! Really though, a bit more effort was needed with this one. Caption “What, have you never heard of the minimalist look?”

Well hopefully there was at least 1 funny answer amongst that lot! It would be great to win at least one link.

Time to get off the bus now, that was one cool & weird ride – and the passengers – well…they all looked like mannequins!

Alan–Hi and thanks for playing! So far, you’re the winner–he, he, he. Let’s see what other captions people come up with. I must say–yours are hilarious! I love ALL of them! So funny re: Barack Obama. I may come back later and talk more about a few of your ideas. They’re that good! :)

Thanks for the tweets, Alan. Really cool of you! I think things are beginning to pick up. Perhaps people are busy with the holidays? Or they feel they must write captions for all 10, which (of course) is not the case.

            Hi Lisa,

I see the comments have really started to increase. That’s really encouraging some really funny comments too. Now where did you find all these new people? 837 stumbleupons currently too, that’s impressive.

  3. Bobo
    December 21, 2011 | 1:41 pm

Who can resist an opportunity to write caption? Not me! So here goes:

    1. “Dave-eee, Dave-eee Crockett, King of the Wild Couture”

    2. “Plastic Surgery Bandages, three for a peso”

    3. “Lexina Luthor, Lex’s stylish sister”

    6. “When you only have enough glitter to cover half your face, green glitter is the way to go”

    7. “The ‘Phantom of the Hoodie’ look is all the rage among South American theater fans”

    8. “The love child of Spiderman and Ultraman only wears the finest hoodies”

    9. “Hot Alien Babes Know, Pirates are the Way to Go”

    10. “Your Face Belongs Above this Dress”

I must admit, the alien theme suggests a subliminal message, something along the lines of “who needs Area 51? Our aliens do fashion shows”. Having never attended either Area 51 or a fashion show I can’t say whether or not there’s any validity to that idea, it just seems to come through to me.

    • CB Driver
      December 21, 2011 | 2:38 pm

Hi, Bobo. These are great captions! I especially love 2, 7, 8 and 9! True re: the subliminal message. Love that! Area 51 Fashion Show would be a great title for me to use in a Tweet. Perhaps I will!

The game will continue for several days–maybe even until after X-mas–and then, the winners will be announced. Perhaps you’ll be one of them…. I’d like to make this as crazy as possible–like it was last time with the Middle Eastern mannequins. If curious, here’s a link to check them out. They were odd, too, but in different ways.

    December 21, 2011 | 7:37 pm

You’ve got to kind of wonder about a place that has such a plethora of creepy mannequins….

    Captions:
    1. “What? My cat likes to sleep on my head.”
    2. PSA: This is what happens when you ride your unicycle on the wrong side of the road.
    3. Celebrity impersonator: Sinead O’Connor!
    4. The Crash Test Dummies’ rebellious teenage daughter.
    5. “My tongue? Oh it’s been like that ever since I got it stuck on a lightpole one Christmas when I was a kid.”
    6. Go Notre Dame! Go Fighting Irish!
    7. Harvey Dent, aka “Two Face”
    8. This is what Spiderman wears when he wants to go incognito.
    9. I’m looking for my birth parents. I was left swaddled in this odd black flag on the doorstep of an orphanage in Area 51. . . .
    10. After I accidentally walked in on my parents having sex, I decided I was better off without eyes.

Bonus photo: I think she’s trying to pick his pocket with her toes.

Hi, Gray. You totally cracked me up–from your first line to the closing one. Great!! It does look like a cat on #1’s head, and funny re: the unicorn! I’m liking Sinead and the tongue line, too. Well, they’re all quite funny actually! 10 is really sick–and great! I think that line could almost apply to 9; her eyes look pretty unusual, too. LOL

Re: the bonus photo–very clever. Love it!! Thanks for playing…winners will be announced after Christmas. :)

    December 22, 2011 | 8:31 pm

Interestingly my favorites are all in a row (6,7 & 8).

Really enjoy the alien vibe on #8.

Names are difficult as non of them scream out in particular but #6 I would call “Merge” and #7 “Half-Life.” Both names seem appropriate for some reason. The only word that comes to mind for *8 is “Scream” perhaps because it looks so silent.

“Merge” seems like a lost soul both new and old, a puzzle piece without a place in the current world.

As for the least appealing award #5 is the winner. It just comes across of off-putting in it’s artificiality.

Interesting taste you’ve got, Mr. Buffalo Screams! I also dig #8. I like your names; they’re short but to the point. I agree re: Merge’s look. Actually, when I look at several of them, I get that sort of feeling. The first one, who’s not technically on the list, looks very sad. He almost looks real. And I agree re: #5.

Thanks for your observations re: these guys (and gals) and possible names. I appreciate it!

  12. Louis Sokol
    December 22, 2011 | 10:14 pm

#7 looks like a Stop Smoking mannequin. Kind of creepy too. Maybe it is Sally Struthers boyfriend? (You have to remember commercials from the 80’s for that one). Either way it would create a stir for people passing by in a department store, wouldn’t it? More emphasis on the mannequin and less on the clothing is not what the designers and stores really want.

Can you imagine if the clothing reflected the mannequin with a different “bare bones” set of clothes on just the left side and nice clothing on the right? People would really walk back and forth to see the difference.

    • CB Driver

Hi, Denise. Great captions! I love the first one. I almost regret not including it. I think it had a lot of potential for this game.

      Meanwhile, thanks for your captions. They’re fun–especially 1, 8 and 9. Cool!

These are the candidates for the observation team. They need to fit in unnoticed to keep an eye on the club. If anything breaks out, they can throw their weight in, but that should be rare. Nothing too weird. No loud tattoos. Forgettable. Unremarkable. Would not get picked out of the crowd. Wait, cancel that. Make them look like visitors. Bring in the guests. Pair ’em up.

Such a unique post, that captured my attention for longer than I care to admit, but leaves me eager to look deeper into what viewers interpret when passing.Perhaps a key to leaving a better impression or one that causes a second look…
Here’s my interpretation on a few of the pics :
    #3)”Oil of Olivia…the look,the feel of sleek…pleather”
    #5)”With Manique,you not only look hot,you feel hot !”
#6)”Get the Authentic Leather,or be half green with envy and wish you did !”
#7)”Even Grim finds the athelete in his neighborHOOD !”
    #8)”RSM-D….Registered-Spiderman-Decoy”
#9)”This kind of BEAUTY is both foreign and dangerous !”
#10)”Face your inner beauty and bare it to the world…it’s not what you can STAND but what you touch upon when you UNDERSTAND !”

And that’s exactly why they’re not up yet–so many comments! Believe it or not, I had to enlist some friends of mine to help. With so many suggestions, and many good ones, the scrolling up and down was too much for just me. Overwhelming, in fact. I needed to have someone on another computer so that I could look and listen (to them reading the names) and make a list. Can you imagine?

Anyway, we just wrapped it up recently, so the winners will be up soon. Another day or so…
