Trippy Travel Photos 5-10: Museum of Legends & Traditions

Skeletons at Nica museum of legends

Remember the Trippy Travel Photo game? After a mini hiatus, it’s back and it’s better (or weirder) than ever!

This time around, it’s a complete Trippy Travel Photo Essay–meaning that I’m posting several photos from the same location. I found that one just wasn’t enough.

And so, without further ado….(mini drum roll here)…let’s try Trippy Travel Times Five.

Here, you’ll do what you’ve done before–that is, guess what the pictures are of and where I took them.

But this time around, I’d like to ask you to come up with captions, too. These photos are just begging for them, don’t you think? Almost as much as the Manic Middle Eastern Mannequins were. (At least, these don’t stare quite as much.)

Or feel free to come up with a bizarre tale. If it’s good, I’ll run right here within the post.

Whether you guess successfully or come up with a caption I use (or a great tale), you’ll be a winner. The prize? A mention of your name and a link to your site from within this post (which is good for SEO, etc.)

The Game

First, focus on these questions:

  • What are they?
  • Where are they?
  • What is their purpose?
  • Are they related to each other in some way (here you can weave a tale if you’d like)

Then, or if you’d prefer, just come up with a caption. Looks like fun, dontcha think? Perhaps you can help us make sense of these bizarre….beings (or whatever you might call them).

How to Play

–Post your guesses here in the Comments Section (tweets don’t count–sorry)

–Keep checking and guessing….it becomes more and more fun by the minute!

–See who won; maybe it will be you!

1. Hurry–she (the cow) is in labor!

Milking the Cow

2. “Aieee, someone help! Angelina Jolie is trying to adopt (steal) my baby!”

Alt caption: “William & Kate, 1 yr. later (nice kilt, Will!)”
Odd Couple

3. The Boy Who Wanted the Willies”  (a Brothers Grimm fairy tale in which a boy named Hans joins a circle of dancing skeletons)

Grim Reaper

4. “I got your travelocity right here!”

Dwarf up close

5. “Eat your heart out, Minnie Pearl!”

Guessing

Slice of iBackpackerTravel. He guessed exactly what–the Museum of Legends and Traditions–and where: León, Nicaragua! I have a feeling he’s been there since very few people could guess this very easily.

Captions

1. Aaron of Aaron’s Worldwide Adventures

2. David of I’m Heading Out

Runner-up: Dyanne of Travel’nLass

3. Sarah of gotapassport

4. Lorna of The Roamantics

5. Lorna of The Roamantics

The Answer

The Museum of Legends and Traditions (El Museo de Tradiciones y Leyendas) in León, Nicaragua.

This unique place, once a prison where torture was an everyday occurrence, is home to the unique figurines you see in the photos. Each has something to do with León and each tells a story. There’s a Spanish colonel, a golden crocodile, a beheaded priest, a witch-pig, La Mocuana, etc. The museum is located in a building that served as a prison during the regime of the Somoza family. Constructed in 1921, it is known as and therefore ‘Prison 21′ and held prisoners between 1921 to 1979. Sadly, the walls of the prisons are contain murals showing the beatings and torture inflicted on the prisoners.

Can’t get enough?

Here are all of the Trippy Travel photos, guesses and winners–all on one page.

Enjoy!

Nice guess, Simon! You may be very close to the truth re: #5….but the country is not Mexico. Any other ideas? Is your guess also a caption?

      Thanks for playing!

They’re in Mexico – some kind of museum celebrating Mexican history?

      April 25, 2011 | 12:29 pm

Good guess, Patty…yes to the museum and no to Mexico! :) Keep trying?

For some strange reason “Portugal” springs to mind (likely due to the dapper blue tunics and red bandanas in the 1st pic?)

And as for captions – I dare say pic #2 verily screams: “William & Kate, 1 yr. later (nice kilt, Will!)”

Hi, Dyanne! Portugal is a great guess…for sure. But…no, it’s not that country. Mexico, an earlier guess, was wrong, too…but it was a bit warmer. :)

Love your caption re: William and Kate–he, he, he. Good one!

      Thanks for playing!

Hi, Lorna…thanks for playing! Yes to the museum and no to Peru….but yes, definitely Latin America!

I love your captions…. Funny re: Cloris Leachman (I remember her!). All of your ideas are fantastic, especially the ones for #3 and #4. Hilarious!

Thanks and by the way, you’re winning at the moment! Dyanne’s doing well, too…. Of course, I haven’t seen Aaron (@adventurousness) yet…and he’s pretty good at these games. We’ll see if the competition picks up…. :)

Ecuador is a great guess….but…not quite it! Yes to Latin America, though. For another clue, check out Aaron’s comment and my response to it. It’ll bring you even closer to the country in which these pics were taken. Thanks!

Great ones, Aaron! So far, you’re the closest to the actual country. Guatemala is very close to this mystery location. :)

Meanwhile, love the captions….#2 and #4 are hilarious. Actually, all of them are! You’re definitely in the winners’ circle! :)

Is the country Honduras? Looks like an exhibit of fairy/Biblical tales…

    1) Joaquin and the beanstalk
    2) Transexual/lesbian sleeping beauty (la bella durmiente)
    3) Had to google this from Wikipedia: The Boy Who Wanted the Willies” is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale in which a boy named Hans joins a circle of dancing skeletons
    4) Blanca Nieves y los Siete Enanos (Snow White and the 7 Dwarves)…hi ho hi ho, it’s off to work we go!
    5) 3 kings/queens bringing baby Jesus gifts…they ran out of gold, frankincense and myrrh. A chicken is so much more practical!

I love each of your captions…OMG to #2….wild. And #3 is very creative, too. Actually, they’re all cool. Great work….I’m sure I”l use at least one of them. You rock! :)

So the country has been guessed, but here are the real conversations:

#1- “Si Senor, my father here has agreed to give you this prize winning bull in payment for my new Invisiline braces.”

#2- “Aieee, someone help! Angelina Jolie is trying to adopt (steal) my baby!”

#3- “Ladies, I swear to beelzebub, I did not have any work done….well…okay, maybe just a wee bit of filler.”

#4- “Hey, these Crocks ARE comfortable!”

    #5-
    “Katy?” (as in Perry)
    “Yes, Russell?” (as in Brand)
“Here comes Snoop Dogg again. This time he’s wearing a caftan AND he has a chicken on his head. What’s up with that?”

Hi, Slice. The next one may be in late July. I’m away now and so, I can’t use any of the pics I’m taking since it would be too easy to guess. I’ve got some great mannequin shots, though, which I might piece together into an offbeat photo essay… Thanks mucho for your interest in the game!
