A recently read that when hiring a tour guide mention that you are not interested in shopping, only in historical information. For me, a big lesson learnt has been not to make a commitment to anything as soon as you arrive at a new destination, especially not at an airport or bus station, or when you are tired, or hungry or in some other state where your defenses are low. When you are in these states, you may want to just let someone take care of you, and you make yourself vulnerable. For bad tour experiences, ours still wins I think! Loads of good advice there.
